Mr. D Math Training Like an Olympic Runner
After watching the Olympics this past summer, my girls became very interested in learning about the different events held in the summer games. Running has never been an interest to either of them but I’ve always stressed how important a consistent exercise program is to their health and wellness. I would have never thought to incorporate running, or more specifically a program on how to run, into their homeschool schedules though. Just like all Mr. D Math classes we have taken, the Training Like an Olympic Runner course did not disappoint and has kept the girls interested in getting outside and moving their bodies!

About Mr. D Math Train Like an Olympic Runner
Mr. D Math Training Like an Olympic Runner is an extremely detailed 32-week course with trainer Jason Bean. Jason is a level 5 USA Track and Field Federation (USATF) certified coach who has worked with national and international sprint teams and runners. The course is geared toward middle and high schoolers, although I think even adults would enjoy this class!
Jason not only teaches the proper techniques and form of running, but he also does so while being genuinely interested in students learning the reasoning behind it all.

I got a bit of pushback during the first lesson. Amelia really didn’t understand why she was doing planks for a running class. Then it all came together as we talked about the muscles she was strengthening and why it was important. Then the planks became a fun competition between sisters. 🙂
The class is designed so each lesson is spread out over the course of a week. This allows the students to listen to the lecture at the beginning of the week then participate in the exercises the rest of the week.
The weeks build upon each other, allowing the student to grow stronger each and every week. It’s a great format because the students can see how much progress they’ve made from the start of the class to the finish.
Why Choose a Homeschool Running Class
We really try to keep our homeschool physical education choices unique and fun. If you follow us on Instagram, you’ll see that we’ve done lots of different activities for physical education like kayaking, ax throwing, and archery. The girls both play team sports so we try to find individual sports or activities for our schooling that we can do during the school day on our own.
I feel that running is an activity that you can enjoy at any age. By learning the techniques and proper form, kids are less likely to injure themselves and more likely to learn to love the sport.
Enrolling in the Mr. D Math running class as a middle schooler will give students a better idea if running is something they want to continue to learn about and participate in. And there are so many opportunities to participate in local races, 5Ks, 10Ks, color runs, and running obstacle courses. Just google your closest large city and you’re sure to find lots of upcoming events that you can participate in as a family.
What’s Needed for Training Like an Olympic Runner
I love that this class is a self-paced online class. It’s very easy to log in and get started each week. I also love that there isn’t a lot of additional things needed for them to participate in the class.
If you are an already active family then the equipment and supplies needed Training Like an Olympic Runner are probably things you have around your house or can easily get your hands-on:
- yoga mat or soft surface
- space to run track/field/gym
- timing device (cell phone app works great)
- GPS device/running app (smart watch) (used in unit 4)
- weighted medicine ball (used in unit 3)
- athletic clothing
- tennis shoes
- water bottle
