Mr. D Math Self Paced ASL I
We recently started exploring more homeschool electives. Electives are classes like a foreign language, home economics, band, choir, or fine arts. This presents a huge problem for me, however. How am I supposed to teach something like a foreign language when I can’t speak that language myself? That’s where Mr. D Math ASL I comes into play.
I received this curriculum for free and was compensated for my time. However, my opinions are completely my own, and I was not required to post a positive review. To learn more visit our disclosure page.
I opened it up for Amelia to choose an elective from Mr. D Math’s extensive course list. To my surprise (and delight), she chose the self paced ASL I class.
Teaching a foreign language in your homeschool can be stressful. We have tried a few online foreign language courses but had no success in finding one that was effective.
Why Learn ASL
Research has shown that things like critical thinking, listening, and problem-solving are all elevated in children who learn a second language. Learning a foreign language also helps stimulate creative thinking.

American Sign Language is the natural language of almost half a million deaf people in the US and Canada. ASL is widely used among hearing people as well. The Mr. D Math ASL courses not only instruct students on the ASL language but incorporates Deaf history and etiquette into the class as well.
Self Paced Homeschool Classes
I’ll admit I was a bit hesitant for her to take on a self-paced language course. I thought self-paced would surely be hard to follow and not as motivating as a live class. Boy, was I ever wrong!
Not only are the lessons bite-sized and extremely well thought out, but you can also rewind and pause as needed. This is especially helpful for a class like American Sign Language.
Amelia has made comments about how self paced ASL is very easy to follow. Students are able to log in, watch lessons, submit work, and communicate with their instructors easily.
Benefits of Mr. D Math Courses
Easy to Use Portal
The team at Mr. D Math does a great job ensuring students can successfully and confidently navigate the learning portal. There are video tutorials to walk you through setting up your profile, navigating your classes and other important areas of Mr. D Math classes.
The learning portal is easily accessible on a PC, tablet or in our case, an iPad. This is fantastic for families who use different devices to access school work.
No Pressure Learning
While there are quizzes and graded assignments, there is very little to no unnecessary pressure put on the students during the classes. The self paced model allows for the student to work at their own pace.
As a family who loves to travel and camp, we like the flexibility that the self paced courses offer. There’s no strict deadlines so we can learn when it’s convenient for us.
Help Sessions
There are optional monthly help sessions available for students. This allows the student to ask questions, meet fellow students, and engage with their instructor. This benefit of Mr. D Math self-paced courses is extremely valuable.

We’re also currently enrolled in Pre-Algebra because this mom isn’t ready to teach the “hard maths” to her kiddos!
