Homeschool Science Class with College Prep Science: Product Review
I’ll be honest, homeschool science is just not my cup of tea (or coffee). My husband usually takes over during science class with the girls because I’m just not able to be as enthusiastic as I would like to be. I guess you can say I’ve been waiting for a homeschool science class that really “wowed” me.

So finding an interactive, self-paced yet thorough homeschool science class that is easy to follow, engaging, and provides hands-on learning plus holds my attention was tough. I was thrilled to find that College Prep Science with Greg Landry checked all those boxes and then some.
College Prep Science – Young Scientist Chemistry
College Prep Science self-paced classes are housed on Canvas. This online learning platform makes the classes extremely easy to access. The class was well laid out and Greg Landry gave us a very detailed video overview of what to expect before beginning.
My first impression upon access to the Young Scientist Chemistry course and materials was that my girls were going to absolutely love the note-taking portion of the class. I’ve never seen a more thorough or exciting study guide for a self-paced homeschool class. Immediately upon printing the study guide, I had Amelia’s full attention.
I love watching the girls get excited when they complete experiments or messy science projects. With the online format, I was afraid they might not be as excited or engaged. However, Greg Landry has created an amazing study guide that encourages detailed note-taking in a very artistic style.

The detail, illustrations and coloration in the study guide makes it fun, engaging and really helped keep Amelia connected to the lessons. She’s a visual learner and loved the fact she had the freedom to “doodle” her notes for Young Scientist Chemistry.
Young Scientist Chemistry covers:
- the scientific method
- measurement
- the periodic table
- solutions
- mixtures
- density
- atoms
- moles
- acids and bases
- chemical reactions
Why Take A Self-Paced Online Homeschool Science Class?
Taking an online, self-paced homeschool class has many benefits. Although College Prep Science does offer live homeschool classes, the self-paced classes fit our family’s needs.
Great for Multi-Grade Families
Using self-paced classes is fantastic if you have children in multiple grade levels. The Young Scientist self-paced courses are geared for grades 4 through 7. With the self-paced format, you can slow down or speed up depending on the needs of your children.
You’re also able to allow older students to dig deeper into specific concepts or lessons if you’d like. We found that we paused the program and did some additional extension activities when we found a topic from Young Scientist Chemistry that we were really interested in learning more about.
Self-Paced Classes are Flexible
Having the ability to watch and re-watch the lessons on demand is a wonderful benefit of a self-paced class. The College Prep Science courses are housed on Canvas which is easily accessible. Plus, when we felt the need to revisit a concept or lesson, it was easy for Amelia to access on her own.
And self-paced classes are also great for families who like to travel or don’t follow a traditional schooling schedule. Accessing the lessons from anywhere and being able to adjust the pace if needed is wonderful.
Why I Love College Prep Science for Homeschool Science Class
Greg Landry is a former college professor and a homeschool dad. His passion for sharing science with homeschooled students is extremely evident in all of his lessons. Each lesson beings with prayer and is designed to show how God’s hand has carefully designed everything we see around us.
It’s very obvious that Greg’s mission is to offer homeschool science classes that are designed to create confident learners who will be well prepared for college and beyond. I really like that the classes are designed to prepare the students for upper-level scientific research and labs if needed.
The lab reports, worksheets, and discussion are all well beyond what I would have expected my 5th grader to be completing. It’s challenging yet very engaging and has kept Amelia wanting to learn more about each topic. I’m extremely impressed and looking forward to more classes with Greg Landry for both girls.
